Let's Get Started!

First you will need to gather materials. For the SE/30 you will need a Torx 15 driver. I bought mine at Sears for $6.00. Be sure and get one with the long shaft, otherwise you will not be able to reach the screws recessed inside the handle. You will also need:

1 sheet of VERY fine grade sandpaper
2 cans of acrylic spray paint (your choice of color)
1 can of clear spray sealer
Assorted screw drivers

Remove the two screws inside the handle on the top of your Mac and the two screws on the back near the bottom of the case. This done you can slide the case off and expose the inside of the computer.

Warning!
Be VERY careful when working around the back of the monitor. If possible discharge the voltage from the leads under the cap on the rear of the monitor. DO NOT DO THIS if you are not certain what you are doing. There can be residual high voltage stored in the monitor. It is possible to get a severe shock if you touch the leads on the back of the monitor.

Take a few minutes and familiarize yourself with the inside of your computer. Notice how all the parts connect to each other. Pay attention to the types of cables and the position where each cable plugs into another part.

Once you are familiar with the parts, it's time to remove the motherboard. Before the motherboard can be removed you must disconnect all of the cables. You must also disconnect and remove any expansion card (ethernet or external video) from the computer if one is installed. In order to do this you must stick your hand into the computer between the monitor and the motherboard. This is the place to be very careful!! Unplug from the motherboard the hard drive scsi cable, the floppy drive cable and the power supply cable coming from the analog/video board to the motherboard.

After this you will gently slide the motherboard up about 3/4-1 inch, until the slots on the side of the board line up the metal tabs on the frame. Then the motherboard can be turned out and you can unhook the speaker wire from the board & carefully set the board aside.
